The incident took place in Fairfield County around 2:40 p.m., Friday, May 5 at the McDonald's in Stamford on Bedford Street.
According to Capt. Chris Baker of the Stamford Police, two officers were working an extra duty job directing traffic when a McDonald's employee called to them for help with a fight inside the restaurant.
The two officers entered the restaurant and found several people arguing and fighting. Additional officers were dispatched to the scene to assist, Baker said.
During the investigation, several of the people involved began to run from the scene and eventually into the parking lot behind McDonald’s, police said.
Several officers gave chase of a man on foot into the parking lot located near the Broad Street Garage. As officers were chasing the male, Baker said they were notified that he was believed to be armed with a handgun.
During the foot chase, the man, later identified as New York resident Clarence Wiley, age 18, of Bloomingburg in Sullivan County, entered his parked car that was in the parking lot and fled, Baker said.
Baker said as officers chased the vehicle on foot as Wiley attempted to escape onto Broad Street at a high rate of speed. While Wiley maneuvered his vehicle, he struck an officer who was on foot and then struck another occupied vehicle that was in the lot.
Wiley continued through the lot nearly striking a police car and then crashed into a fence where the vehicle became disabled, Baker said.
Officers took Wiley into custody and located a .40 cal. handgun in his waistband, police said.
Wiley was arrested and charged with:
- Illegal possession of a firearm without a permit
- Weapons in a motor vehicle
- Criminal attempt at assault
- Assault
- Assault on a police officer
- Interfering with police
- Evading motor vehicle collision
- Reckless operation of a vehicle
He was held on a $150,000 bond.
One Stamford Police Officer was injured in the incident and was treated and released. There were no injuries to the occupants of the car that Wiley struck.
